Frequently asked questions
Why is the space cost per set so high when I only store a few sets?
Because the rent on the room is the same whether it holds 20 sets or 200. Storage gets cheaper per set as you fill the racks, which is why utilization matters more than the price of the bags.
Should I include the changeover appointment labor in the handling minutes?
Only if you do not charge for the changeover separately. Most shops bill the swap as its own service, so keep the handling minutes to the storage-specific work: bagging, tagging, racking, locating and retrieving.
What if the target-margin price is higher than customers will pay?
Then storage on its own is not profitable at your current fill rate, and the honest options are to store more sets in the same space, cut the minutes per set with a better rack and labeling system, or treat storage as a loss leader that locks in two changeovers and tire sales per year.
